10 Guidelines for Discerning if a Prophetic Word is Valid for You

 

One question that frequently shows up for new believers is, “Once I hear a general prophetic word—for a year, season, congregation, or wider Body of Messiah—how do I discern what portion of it God is inviting me to personally receive and steward?” 

A general prophetic word does not automatically become a personal prophetic word simply because it resonates with us. A wiser pattern is

receive → test → listen → respond → steward.

Paul explicitly tells believers not to despise prophecy, but also to test what they hear; and he later reminds Timothy that prophetic words can be remembered and actively stewarded in the life of faith (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21; 1 Timothy 1:18).

Here are 10 steps that form a practical approach to making any message your own: 

1. Receive it with open hands rather than immediately claiming it. Listen without feeling obligated to make every part of the word yours. A general word may contain something for you, something for others, or simply something worth watching and praying about.
   
2. Test it against Scripture. Ask, Does this agree with the revealed character, covenant purposes, and Word of God? Does it point me toward Messiah, faithfulness, holiness, love, truth, and obedience? Testing prophecy isn’t presented in Scripture as unbelief; it is part of receiving prophecy responsibly.
3. Bring the word back to God. Instead of asking only, “Is this word true?” ask, “Holy Spirit, is there something in this word You are speaking specifically to me?” This moves you from borrowing another person’s revelation toward listening for God’s personal invitation.
4. Notice what the Holy Spirit highlights. You don’t necessarily need to embrace the entire prophetic message. A single Scripture, phrase, image, or theme may keep drawing your attention. That may be the portion worth lingering over in prayer.
5. Look for confirmation. Notice whether the same theme has already been appearing in Scripture, prayer, circumstances, previous words, conversations, or things God has been emphasizing to you. Responsible teaching on stewarding prophecy recommends involving trustworthy spiritual counsel rather than interpreting significant words entirely alone.
6. Write down what you believe God is saying. Once a word has been discerned as relevant, recording it makes it possible to return to it, pray over it, and recognize fulfillment or further clarification over time.
7. Turn the word into prayer. Pray, “Father, if this is what You are emphasizing in my life during this season, show me what it looks like to walk with You in it.” Prayer leaves the fulfillment in God’s hands while positioning us to participate with Him.
8. Identify your response. Ask, “What does this invitation look like in ordinary life?” It might mean forgiving someone, beginning something, ending something, resting, speaking differently, studying a particular Scripture, repairing a relationship, or taking one small act of obedience. An important point: we cannot manufacture the fulfillment of a prophetic promise, but we can respond to the small instructions God gives along the way.
9. Speak Scripture rather than merely repeating the message or prophecy. If a message’s theme is favor, for example, find the Scriptures concerning God’s favor that the Spirit particularly illuminates for you. Now your declaration is anchored in something firmer than someone else’s prophetic interpretation: “This is what God has said in His Word.”
10. Revisit rather than force fulfillment. Some words make sense immediately; others unfold over months or years. Paul’s language to Timothy is interesting here: he reminds Timothy of prophetic words previously spoken concerning him and tells him that through them he can wage the good warfare (1 Timothy 1:18). Prophetic words could therefore function as something remembered and carried, not merely something heard once. 

 

The whole process can be contained in five personal questions: 

1. What am I hearing?
   What word, Scripture, image, or theme is drawing my attention?
2. What does Scripture say?
   Where is this theme anchored in God’s written Word?
3. What is God highlighting for me?
   Lord, is there something here You want me to receive personally?
4. How am I being invited to respond?
   Is there something to believe, release, speak, practice, wait for, or obey?
5. How will I steward it?
   Write it. Pray it. Return to it. Watch for God’s unfolding work.
