New Perception Creative Prompt
Today I encourage you to write, sketch, collage, or paint (or combine them all in a mixed media piece!) – a new perception of Jesus/God.
In Friday’s post, I talked about how our perception of God forms the foundation of our entire spiritual belief system. If the perception is somehow skewed, then our spiritual lives are built around that skew. Think about when you try to hang a painting or picture on a wall where the join of wall and ceiling looks relatively level…but when you level the picture, it looks crooked in relation to the join of wall and ceiling. The reason is because the entire room is not exactly level; it is “skewed”.
The same thing occurs in our spiritual lives. We may not know that our perception is “off” or “skewed” till we try to learn something new concerning our spirit, and it just doesn’t seem “right”, or we find that we are in some sort of emotional pain and our spiritual views don’t seem to help. The good news is that we can “remodel” our belief system without the same amount of work it would take to remodel a room of our house!
So, today, we are going to look at many of the metaphors that is used of Jesus in Scripture – but just choose one that speaks to you…maybe:
1. one that is the exact opposite of what you found on Friday (if you found a perception that doesn’t match what the Bible says), or
2. one that builds on the good perception you already have, or
3. one that you haven’t really explored much in the past and you sense the Lord leading you to understand that aspect of Him more.
Create your art piece, using words, images, symbols, or simple color…spend a little time reflecting on what you have learned and journal about the name/title/metaphor you chose, why you chose it, the symbolism in your piece, what you feel has shifted within you (if any), what newer intimacy and understanding you have now and share it with us here!
Jesus as my Shepherd is the way I picture Him most often: protective, gentle, leading, providing, and in nature!
I created this image to be part of another healing art exercise here: Transformed Through Beholding His Glory {Art Exercise #2}
Enjoy your time with God…be contemplative, prayerful, look up the scriptures in different translations…sit with your creation over this week, let the Holy Spirit speak to you over the course of the days and revisit the above questions periodically…
