Cheshvan: The Quiet Rain of the Spirit
This is part 1 of the Hebrew Month of Cheshvan Reflections
The fall feasts cycle has focused on a fresh start, atonement, and renewed covenant relationship – Chesvan gives us the opportunity to reflect on how will we live that out in the year ahead.
Cheshvan arrives — soft and unhurried, like rain upon tilled soil (Chesvan is the beginning of the rainy season in Israel). It is the only month without a festival, and yet it is full — pregnant with the quiet work of God. The harvest has been gathered, the fruit weighed, and now the soul exhales. The fields rest beneath the first rains, drinking deeply, and in that hidden place beneath the surface, life begins again.
In the hush between seasons, the soul bends low to collect what the Spirit has grown — lessons, faith, forgiveness, courage — storing them in the heart like treasures for the next planting. For every harvest carries within it the whisper of tomorrow’s hope. And those who gather with care learn that nothing given to God is ever lost; it only waits for His appointed season to rise again.
This is the rhythm of the Spirit — what was sown in celebration now sinks deeper, watered by His presence. The blessings of the past season do not vanish; they root. Every drop of rain, every whispered prayer, every tear of surrender becomes nourishment for the seeds of righteousness planted during the holy days.
Cheshvan teaches us that growth is not always seen — sometimes it is felt in the stillness, in the surrender, in the soaking. It is the month of quiet faith, when we trust the unseen work of the Holy Spirit to transform what was sown into what will yet bloom.
As the rains fall, may our hearts remain open — soft soil beneath His gentle hand. May we rest in the knowing that He who sent the rain will also bring the harvest in its time.
This is the month to…
- Reflect on the places in your soul where you’ve been hurt, where the Lord has been healing with His Presence, and to let wholeness, Shalom, settle deep withing
- Release hurts that have been uncovered
- Reflect on the goodness and faithfulness of God
- Reflect and process what you heard from the Lord in the past season
- Invite the fragrant rain of the Holy Spirit to infiltrate your soul so you can follow His lead in the days and months to come
