5 Tests for “Is This God?” – Test 4
Test #4: Seek confirmation from wise counselors.
1. Seeking advice from other trusted and spiritually mature believers can help confirm or challenge the message you believe you’re hearing from God. This type of confirmation is necessary when you are considering making life altering changes and seeking God’s wisdom.
2. Is the message from the voice confirmed in your quiet times or from messages from your spiritual community? God tends to repeat Himself in order to help you understand it is really coming from Him. For myself, I have learned that He will confirm His voice, His direction from at least 3 totally unrelated sources within a matter of days, even sending people to my front door saying what I need to hear! This idea of repetition is a principle found in scripture. In Philippians 3:1 (NASB), we read:
Finally, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord.
To write the same things again is no trouble for me, and it is a safeguard for you.
3. And finally, sometimes the God confirms His voice for you by speaking His voice through you—meant to bless, comfort, or encourage another in their moment of need…
Consider how there are moments when you’re in prayer for a friend or family member that a whisper rises—perhaps a verse of Scripture, perhaps a phrase wrapped in love—words so tender and specific they could only be meant for that person. You sense the gentle nudge to write them down, to share them through a handwritten card or the warmth of a phone call. You step forward in quiet obedience. And when those words, born in the sacred space of prayer, meet the heart they were meant for, something holy happens. You see tears, relief, hope rekindled—and you know with certainty that the Lord has spoken. He Himself has confirmed His voice through an act of simple obedience. To stand in that thin place, where heaven brushes earth and God touches another through you, is a joy unlike anything else.
